In his autobiography Nobel Prize-winning author and ponderous moralist Günter Grass reveals that he’s been banging his own little tin drum for 60 years: at 17 he joined the Waffen SS. His revelation shocked and disappointed many Germans, but no one more than his biographer Michael Juergs, who could have used this bit of personal history to pump up sales of his book. He said through gritted teeth, "I feel a personal disappointment." Grass is one of those authors you only need to read once to get the point. Now, however, we’re going to have to reread him to look for signs of a bad conscience.
