Peter Clark provides context for this year’s 2011 International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF). This year’s prize coincides with the Arab Spring uprisings, including Syria, which reached a dangerous new stage today (image above from the NY Times story). The prize also highlights how much Arab fiction has changed over the past ten years, a vast expansion of the varieties of themes and forms.
