Lots of long days getting some projects out the door lately, so not much time for blogging–or for much of anything else but working.
When I can As usual for Fridays in this space I have some recommendations for things to read, watch or do over the weekend.
The online journal MAS Context goes analog–i.e., in physical rather than virtual space–in an event on October 13, 2012. Speakers from the design and architecture fields will present on a set of topics: production, visual communication, practice and curation. The presenters include Jimenez Lai, Sean Lally, David Brown, Christopher Baker, John Pobojewski, Sara C. Aye & George Aye, Andrew Clark, David Sieren, Ed Marszewski, Marc Fisher, Claire Werner & Sam Vinz, and Dieter Roelstraete, who will do double duty as the DJ during the closing party. The event will take place at the New Projectsspace on Chicago’s South Side. It will run from 1 PM until 11. Details and RSVP here. eVolo magazine has an annual Skyscraper Competition. The contest is open to architects, students, engineers, designers, and artists. The organizers describe the competition as
an investigation on the public and private space and the role of the individual and the collective in the creation of a dynamic and adaptive vertical community. It is also a response to the exploration and adaptation of new habitats and territories based on a dynamic equilibrium between man and nature – a new kind of responsive and adaptive design capable of intelligent growth through the self-regulation of its own systems.
In other words, your entry should be the exact opposite of this. The submission requirements are pretty loose, so give it a shot. Register before November 13, 2012 for a discounted rate. The final deadline for entry is January 15, 2013. Winners will be announced in March, 2013. Details at eVolo.
Speaking of contests, Zeitgeist Films is running a Quay Brothers photo contest to accompany the retrospective of their films currently running at MoMA. See the entries so far here. There are lots of creepy dolls. Submissions must be posted by November 30, 2012.
Andjust in time for the U.S. presidential elections, Lapham’s Quarterly has published their Politics issue, with acollection of historical writings on politics. For example, Thomas Jefferson writes to his old friend John Adams in 1812, shortly before they died,
But whither is senile garrulity leading me? Into politics, of which I have taken final leave. I think little of them, and say less. I have given up newspapers in exchange for Tacitus and Thucydides for Newton and Euclid; and I find myself much the happier.
